Description
A perfect piece for graduation, Rising Tide shares the message that we are all boats on the ocean, striving for a common port and purpose. The song echoes a quote made popular by President John F. Kennedy, “a rising tide lifts all boats.” In this context, the poet believes that when one of us succeeds, all of us succeed.
The piece begins with a beautiful depiction of the “dawn on the horizon.” The time signatures (5/4 and 6/4) imitate the waves in the ocean while dynamics play an important role in moving the fleet forward to the “port that shines before us.” A simple ostinati section in the middle builds as it adds voices, giving the impression of the boats once again meeting at the final destination.
